Functional skills are the mathematics, English, and ICT credentials people need to increase their prospects of landing a job and getting into a university. A level 2 certificate is also required in order to complete an apprenticeship.

The most common functional skills are arithmetic and English because these level 2 credentials are required for the majority of occupations and collegiate programmes. These credentials are equal to a C in the previous grading scale or a level 4 GCSE.
